Happy Holidays!
December 25, 2009
Happy Holidays Everyone,
On behalf of the Mississauga Terriers Hockey Club and everyone involved with the organization, I would like to extend to each of you and your families, our warmest wishes for the holiday season.
The first half of this year has been a huge success and as Terrier management, we couldn’t be happier. Being a winner encompasses far more than outscoring the competition. You have all proven that you are winners! With every organization of this magnitude, we expect a few “road bumps” along the journey. But those “road bumps” are small and pale by comparison to the good that comes from being a Terrier.
Good things like donating $2000 to Easter Seals and $800 to Covenant House and donating 130 gifts to the CP24/Chum Christmas Wish. We hosted 30 teams at our 24th annual Terry Terrier Tournament from leagues all over Ontario and the U.S. Then there are the individual teams that donate their time to help those less fortunate, pool parties, signing parties, bowling parties, bus trips, golf tournaments and other fund raisers. There is the Xmas Pizza Parties, the Halloween Dance, the season ending Player’s Banquet where we recognize all the players and award the Annual Joe Schembri Scholarship, the John Vella Volunteer of the Year award, the Reg Schembri Team MVP awards and the list goes on! Most importantly, it’s the laughter, the smiles, the tears, and the friendships that we all share.
We take pride in the entire Terrier Organization and what we stand for. We take pride in our coaches and management staff. We know you dedicate so much of your spare time for all the right reasons.
Let’s carry our momentum through the remainder of the season. Win, lose or draw! Continue to wear our colours with pride and continue to act in a manner that represents that wonderful mixture of your individualism and our “Do It for the Kids” Terrier philosophy.
At this time of year, our thoughts turn to family, and giving and sharing. So enjoy the holiday season, have fun with your Christmas tournaments and good luck with the remainder of the year.
Happy Holidays to Everyone,
Mississauga Terriers Executives
Covenant House the big winner from Halloween dance
November 1, 2009
Oh what a night!
The annual Halloween dance this year was superb. More people wore costumes, more people were in a good mood and more people were generous.
This year the Midget hockey team had a brilliant idea. As Mark Rousseau told the group none of the team’s parents are going without, but they are aware that there are too many kids on the streets who do not have enough food or shelter to get them through these difficult times. So the parents dressed as homeless people, not to cause pity, but to encourage everyone to donate money to Covenant House, an area organization that helps young people who need food and shelter.
The process worked. The team came up with $800, which says a lot for all of the Terrier’s parents who attended the event. And to make the event even better members of the Terrier’s executive decided to match the amount the team was able to raise. So by the end of the night the Midget team was able to doante $1,600 to Covenant House.
It was a remarkable idea from the team and a remarkable result!
Congratulations to every one who donated.
H1N1 information
November 1, 2009
It is clear that this is going to be a hockey season like no other.
The H1N1 has already taken the life of a young player from the North Stars, and the flu season is just beginning. People are lining up for five or six hours to make sure they get innoculated None of us have seen anything like this before and don’t want to see it again.
If you gave any questions about the virus and what precautions you should take please go to a number of different sites. For tips about hockey within the GTHL go to the GTHL Website where you will find a statement on what you should do.
For general information about the virus check out this Health Canada website that provides all sorts of good information.
You can also read an online chat that was conducted about H1N1 and minor hockey by CBCSports.ca. The discussion was moderated by Ken Wolff, who is also the President of the Terriers.
You can also check out this story about how you keep child’s hockey equipment clean so that it is not a source for the H1N1 virus.
